Clifton Man Accused of Fraudulently Attempting to Collect Over $1K in Insurance Benefits

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces the arrest of Comert Comertogullari, 37, of Clifton.

Comertogullari was arrested without incident today at approximately 7:45 a.m., in Clifton, by members the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Insurance Fraud Unit.

He was charged on the same date by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office with one count of second degree Insurance Fraud in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-4.6(c) by knowingly committing five or more acts of Insurance Fraud in an attempt to wrongfully obtain a benefit in excess of $1,000.00. A second degree offense carries a maximum term of ten years in New Jersey State Prison.

Comertogullari was released on a summons- complaint.

According to authorities, on September 15, 2016, Comertogullari was involved in a motor vehicle crash in Woodland Park, New Jersey. He was later arrested and charged by the Woodland Park Police Department with a number of motor vehicle offenses including operating a motor vehicle under the influence, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and refusal to submit to a breathalyzer test.

Those charges were resolved in Woodland Park Municipal Court. A subsequent investigation revealed that Comertogullari allegedly made five or more false and/or misleading statements of fact to his insurance company regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash in an attempt to wrongfully collect repair benefits.
