Clifton Emergency Responders Rescue Explorer from 'The Gates of Hell' Under Ground Tunnels

Clifton

A man who reportedly attempted to trespass inside a series of underground tunnels and storm drains in Clifton had emergency rescue crews rescue the victim after he fell through a metal grate.

Emergency responders rushed the 800 block of Paulison Avenue after receiving reports of a person trespassing inside the storm drain system dubbed 'The Gates of Hell' due to its dark evil graffiti-strewn tunnels that many fear of making the journey but still illegally attempt the task.

Crews found the injured -but conscious and alert- male victim several feet down inside the tunnels and began the rescue operation.

The victim was pulled up to safety then rushed to University Hospital in Newark where he is said to be in stable condition.

According to Kristen Koennemann (onlyinyourstate.com) "The Clifton drainage tunnel gained notoriety after being featured in the infamous publication, 'Weird New Jersey.' It is a popular hangout for wayward youth, and trespassing is illegal. It’s probably not a place you’d want to explore anyway; shady characters frequent the area.

"The tunnels were built to collect runoff from Weasel Brook during rainstorms, but for decades they've been surrounded by supernatural stories. You'll find the area covered in graffiti, much of it symbols of Satan including 666 and the inverted pentagram".

According to Clifton Police, the area is off limits, and anyone trespassing will be **arrested then charged**.
