Clifton Car Theft Leads to Police Pursuit, Crash in Newark's South Ward

Clifton Newark

According to Clifton officials, Wednesday night, at approximately 9:45 p.m., a family was unloading groceries from their new 2020 Hyundai Sonata on the corner of Grove Street and Robin Hood Road.

At that point, a suspect or suspects entered the vehicle and fled in the Hyundai Sonata. Witnesses stated that the suspects arrived in a trail vehicle, described as being an SUV.

Police say that officers began searching the area and located both the SUV and Hyundai Sonata traveling eastbound on Route 3.

According to police, the drivers of both vehicles refused to stop and officers initiated a vehicle pursuit, during which time they momentarily lost sight of said vehicles.

Police report that the officers then relocated the SUV and reinstituted the pursuit. The pursuit continued into the City of Newark, where both the pursuing Clifton Police unit and the suspect vehicle were involved in a crash in the area of Avon Avenue; deploying the airbags in the patrol car.

A foot pursuit then took place between the Clifton officer that was involved in the crash and the suspects.

The suspects ultimately managed to evade capture.

The Hyundai Sonata was later recovered in Irvington.
