Church Roof Collapses During Service in Rahway

Authorities are investigating a roof collapse during a church's service in Rahway leaving several injured this afternoon. 

First responders were dispatched to Korean Union United Methodist Church on West Grand Avenue for a report of a collapse shortly after 2 p.m. 

Pastor Cesar of the Manatial de Vida Pentecostal congregation said they rent out the space for church from Korean Union United Methodist Church.

He added, the mass, which starts at 2 p.m., had just initiated when approximately 15 minutes in, the roof collapse on them. "It all happened so quickly."

From the approximately 75 members present, we all made it out, although there were several injured, said the pastor.

Our members began searching through the damage to help any injured, when they found one of our sisters, who was unconscious. 

Rahway Fire Chief Rutter said a total of fifteen suffered injuries. One of the victims was taken to University Hospital in critical condition while the other thirteen were transported to Robert Wood Johnson in Rahway. 

Upon arrival, it was a complete chaos, the chief added. 

Rahway fire crews, police and Union County responders did a great job in such a chaotic scenario. 

Elizabeth Fire Department's technical rescue team was at the scene conducting an assessment, Delia said.

The cause remains under investigation.
