Chemical Fire in Newark's East Ward Extinguished by Firefighters

Newark

Fire officials in Newark have announced that firefighters extinguished a fire late Monday evening at 268 Doremus Avenue in the city's East Ward.

Officials said the fire was the result of a small chemical explosion at the location, a business known as Elan Foods Extracts and Ingredients.

According to officials, at approximately 10:17 p.m., firefighters observed a fire in a 900-gallon tank outside the location.

The tank contained Isopropyl alcohol, which was being mixed with hydrogen ultimately causing the explosion.

Four employees were at the scene, but there were no injuries reported.

The fire resulted in moderate structural damage to equipment and the building at the business site officials said.

The NFD Hazardous Materials Team has determined that no health concerns are evident.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, which also responded to the location, will monitor the clean-up to be conducted by the business.
