Charges Against Man Involved in Fatal Carjacking Are Upgraded

Newark -- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that Mutah Brown, 20, of Newark has been charged with aggravated manslaughter and death by auto following a fatal crash on May 6 that resulted in the death of 18-year-old Quadir K. Jackson, also of Newark.

Authorities said Jackson was in a carjacked Mercedes Benz that pilice pursued by when it crashed.

Jackson sustained fatal injuries.

Police said Brown was originally charged with 2nd degree receiving stolen property and 2nd degree eluding.

Police also charged Kevin Anderson, 21, with 2nd degree receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.

The charges against Brown, the alleged driver, were upgraded.

A detention hearing is scheduled for 9 am on Tuesday May 6, before the Honorable Alfonse Cifelli, Judge of the Superior Court.

These are accusations.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
