For today, Cinco de Mayo, New Jersey residents are gearing up for a day filled with food, music, dancing, and plenty of community spirit.
While many think of the holiday as a time for tacos, margaritas, and vibrant parties, it’s worth remembering the history behind the celebration and the importance of keeping safety in mind as you enjoy the day.
According to the National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian Institution, and Encyclopedia Britannica, Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when the Mexican army achieved an unexpected victory over the French.
Though it’s often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a broader celebration of Mexican culture, particularly in the United States.

Here in New Jersey, there’s no shortage of places to join the fun:
🌮 Newark will host local restaurant specials, especially in the Ironbound Section, offering authentic Mexican cuisine and live music.
🎶 Jersey City plans a waterfront celebration with mariachi bands and traditional dancing, drawing families and friends to enjoy the scenic views alongside the festivities.
🍹 Paterson, home to a vibrant Hispanic community, will light up with street fairs and family-friendly events featuring local artists, crafts, and plenty of great food.

The New Jersey State Police remind everyone to drink responsibly, designate a sober driver, or use rideshare services if you plan on consuming alcohol.
According to the NJ State Police, the combination of alcohol and driving can turn a joyful day into a tragedy, so they urge everyone to plan ahead and look out for one another.
