Car Fire Kills One on I-78 in Somerset County

NJ State Police is investigating a car fire that left at least one person dead on a highway in Somerset County early Sunday morning. 

According to a preliminary investigation, State Troopers were called to reports of a crash in the westbound lanes of I-78 near Drift Road to investigate reports of a collision around 3:50 a.m. 

According to police, units arrived and found a vehicle on fire in a wooded portion of the highway. 

Emergency responders quickly got the blaze under control, but after searching the scene for victims, one person was found dead at the location. 

The cause of the crash has not been determined, and the victim's identity has not been released at this time. 

Police also closed the eastbound lanes after an unrelated crash with an overturned vehicle.
