Ocean County law enforcement officials are looking at what caused a crash that fatally injured a pedestrian in Lakewood on Friday morning.
Officials say at approximately 12:30 a.m., emergency responders rushed to the area of Route 9 near John Street to investigate reports of a person struck by a car.
Upon arrival, police said they found a senior man severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive man lying on the ground with a damaged wheelchair nearby.
Police believe that the man who used a wheelchair drove into traffic, was struck by a car, and then thrown several feet.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver remained at the location and cooperated with authorities.
There were no other injuries reported.
