Police in Irvington Township are investigating the cause of a crash that resulted in a vehicle plunging into the Elizabeth River near City Hall on Sunday.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred in the vicinity of Clinton Avenue and Civic Square, not far from the township's municipal building.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched after receiving alerts about a vehicle that had fallen from a parking area and landed overturned in the river basin.
Firefighters stationed nearby responded rapidly and discovered the car overturned, but the basin was not filled with water.
Fortunately, it appeared that the vehicle's occupants had been safely extricated and did not suffer any serious injuries.
Authorities have not yet released details about the driver or any passengers, and the exact circumstances leading to the crash remain unclear.
The Irvington Police Department has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the vehicle entering the basin.
More information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
