Cedar Grove Police said on Saturday at 12:55 a.m., a Timber Rock Court resident reported an armed robbery in progress and that they were following the suspect vehicle on Route 23.

Police said patrol officers quickly located the suspect and caller.

According to police, units pursued the suspected vehicle into Verona then onto Route 280 West at high speed, eventually breaking off the chase when it was determined that no robbery had occurred.

Police said the homeowner reportedly observed three individuals in his driveway and believed one of the suspects held a handgun.

It was later determined that their unlocked parked vehicle had been searched through, but nothing was reported taken.

Police reminded residents to lock and remove keys and valuables from vehicles daily.

“If you observe suspicious activity or a crime, contact police immediately. It is not safe to investigate, follow or go looking for the actors on your own,”  Chief J. Cirasa said.

The incident is under investigation.
