Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

Newark Police patrol units transported two of their own officers to University Hospital suffering stab wounds after officers responded to a domestic violence incident in Newark’s Central Ward that turned violent this afternoon.

It happened just before 4:40 p.m. near 685 Martin Luther King Boulevard (High Street).

A preliminary investigation indicated that the officers were attacked by a suspect who brandished a knife and stabbed one officer in his flank, while a second Newark cop was slashed on the forearm.

RLS Media learned that this was a domestic violence incident where a boyfriend and girlfriend engaged in a physical confrontation in which the male turned the knife on the officers who were dispatched there to assist.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene but not before two other people suffered stab wounds. All non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
