New Jersey State Police are investigating a deadly crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 78 in Hunterdon County.
According to preliminary information, emergency crews responded shortly before 4 a.m. to the westbound lanes of I-78 near milepost 15.4 in Union Township after a car reportedly crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer.
Initial reports indicated a possible fatality, but an update from the scene shortly after 4 a.m. reported two fatalities.
Authorities said at least one right lane was closed while police and emergency crews remained at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the crash and the identities of the victims have not yet been released.
