A shooting incident in Newark's South Ward has left one person severely injured and another wounded, triggering a comprehensive investigation by Newark Police and The Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The incident unfolded just before 8:15 p.m. in the vicinity of 305 Goldsmith Avenue, sending shockwaves through the community.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation indicated that gunfire erupted, leading to a significant police presence at the scene.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a seriously injured male victim after gunmen sprayed the area in this drive-by shooting.

In rapid response to the incident, law enforcement officers located a vehicle reportedly fleeing the area, prompting a high-speed chase onto I-78 into Irvington before circling back to Newark.

The suspects then abandoned the vehicle on foot near the intersection of Osborne and Clinton Avenue, successfully evading capture and remaining at large.

Meanwhile, Beth Israel Hospital officials alerted law enforcement about a gunshot victim who had arrived at the emergency room via a private vehicle.

Reports said Newark Police secured the vehicle for further investigation as they work to determine the motive behind the attack.

Notably, the incident occurred in the vicinity of a football game at the nearby Weequahic High School football field.

However, authorities have not confirmed any link between the shooting and the ongoing competition at this time.

CLARIFICATION 5:50 am 10/13: Initially, it was stated in the preliminary report that the victim had been struck in the head by gunfire. However, updated information from officials clarifies that while the victim did suffer serious injuries, the wound was not to the head. The ECPO confirmed Friday morning this incident was non-fatal.
