BREAKING: Severe Injuries Reported in NJ Turnpike Crash in Elizabeth

NJ Department of Transportation officials are advising motorists to expect heavy delays on the NJ Turnpike while emergency responders assist injured victims in a crash in Union County at this time. 

Preliminary information from the scene indicates that at approximately 7:22 a.m., NJ State Troopers responded to reports of a crash in the northbound lanes in Exit 13 in Elizabeth. 

Upon arrival, firefighters and rescue crews began the process of extricating victims from a boxed truck that reportedly collided with a vehicle. 

At least one person suffered "grave" injuries at the scene. 

One other person was rushed to University Hospital in Newark in serious condition. 

NJ State Police has taken over the investigation and is not controlling traffic on the highway. 

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
