Authorities have launched a joint investigation after a police-involved shooting occurred Saturday afternoon near the border of Hudson and Bergen counties, leaving a man seriously injured.

According to preliminary information, around 3:55 p.m., Kearny and North Arlington Police responded to reports of an armed robbery in progress at a business located at the corner of Schuyler Avenue and Route 7.

Officials said the suspect fired a shot toward employees before fleeing the scene in a dark-colored Honda with an unknown amount of proceeds.

Officers from Kearny and neighboring North Arlington quickly launched a search, which led them to the 100 block of Porete Avenue.

Police closed in on a potential suspect and attempted to get him to surrender after reportedly observing a weapon.

As the standoff transpired, the Bergen County Regional SWAT team was called in for assistance.

During the encounter, officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect in the head. It is not known which agency fired their weapon that struck the suspect at this time.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, and the area was immediately secured. The suspect’s condition has not been officially confirmed but is believed to be serious.

The incident is under active investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, which handles all officer-involved shootings.

Further information will be provided once it becomes available from officials.
