There is an active and ongoing investigation underway into a police pursuit that resulted in shots fired on a highway in Bergen County a short time ago.

NJ State Police officials have not released details, but according to preliminary reports from the scene, it appears that officers from towns in Bergen County, including Ringwood Police, were in pursuit of a white SUV where the driver allegedly struck a police officer on Skyline Drive in Mahwah around 5:35 a.m.

Reports said the suspect sped away from officers and ended up in the northbound lanes of I-287, where the vehicle began to overheat  at that location.

The female suspect was taken into custody, but there were reports of shots fired at the scene.
