BREAKING NEWARK: Woman Killed in Overnight Newark North Ward Gunfire

There is an active investigation underway into a shooting that took the life of a woman in Newark's North Ward overnight.

The violent shooting incident connected on an adult female at a housing development in the 900 block of Franklin Avenue where police responded to a ShotsSpotter activation that alerted them to possible gunfire at approximately 12:10 a.m.

According to reports, several police units arrived at the scene and found a severely injured woman suffering gunshot wounds to her back at that location.

Police secured the scene as EMS rushed the woman to University Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead reports said.

Authorities were informed that a black male suspect who wore a white t-shirt fled the scene in a white BMW X5, with full tints, immediately after the shooting. Police say they are looking for the same type of vehicle that was stolen out of Passaic County.

Residents in the area reported that they heard just under a dozen shots in the area before police and EMS arrived in the area.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

The suspect remains at-large.
