BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Police Involved Shooting Reported in Newark

Police are closing off a section of NJ-21 in Newark as authorities set up a large crime scene to investigate a police-involved shooting with confirmed injuries at this time.

According to preliminary reports, the incident began as an armed robbery at a barber shop when in the 400 block of Orange Street where two suspects reportedly pulled a weapon then attempted to rob it while the officer was inside.

The officer fired shots at the suspects striking one of them in the face reports said.

Police began to chase the suspects, where they captured both males in the vicinity of Clay and NJ-21.

EMS were called to the scene to transport the suspect to the hospital where he suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the chin.

Police have all lanes shut down on NJ-21 from Bridge Street as they conduct the active and ongoing investigation.

There were no reports of injured officers.

The investigation is active and in its early stages.

**UPDATED 9:49 p.m.** NPD confirmed off-duty involved shooting as a result of an attempted robbery that occurred at 9:05 p.m. in the vicinity of 480 Orange Street. One (1) weapon recovered at the scene. The investigation is active and ongoing.

**UPDATED 9:54 p.m.** This is now an Essex County Prosecutor's Office active investigation.
