BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Man Shot Dead Overnight Near Newark Springfield Avenue Bar

Newark Police officers and detectives set up a crime scene as they taped off an area around a bar where they investigated a shooting that left a male fatally wounded in Newark early Saturday morning.

According to preliminary reports into RLS Metro Breaking News, multiple rounds of gunfire erupted in the 500 block of Springfield Avenue sending police units to the scene where they arrived to find a male suffering a gunshot wound to the chest near the Mercedes and Minks bar just before 2:50 a.m.

Police requested EMS and additional police officers to the scene as the victim's condition began to deteriorate and patrons began to exit the bar according to reports.

EMS rushed the unidentified victim to University Hospital where doctors began treatment while police worked the scene to find evidence to support a motive for the shooting and a possible suspect.

According to a brief statement released to our weekend staff at RLS Metro, Essex County Prosecutor's Office Spokeswoman Katherine Carter said the following: "I can confirm a fatal shooting incident of one (1) male victim who was pronounced dead at 3:18 a.m. We currently do not have additional details or identity of the victim to release at this time."

It is not immediately clear, nor have police confirmed if the shooting is related to normal business operations at the Mercedes & Minks bar.

The investigation is in its early stages,
