A shooting that occurred late last night in a neighborhood in Newark has left a popular Newark resident dead according to authorities.

Reports of shots fired sent police to the area of Bergen Street and 14th Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. where first arriving officers located the male victim critically injured at that location.

EMS rushed to the scene and transported the man a very short distance to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later authorities confirmed.

Family members who contacted RLS Metro Breaking News identified the victim as Eric "Uggie" Bowen, 44, who was just as an icon to the Newark community as the mayor.

Our early morning staff were met with hundreds of messages from residents from around the city and Essex County who were attempting to receive confirmation of "Uggie's" fatality.

According to family members, Uggie, was a staple to the dance and entertainment community where he always strutted the latest dance moves at parties and could also be seen with his radio, at any given time, entertaining dozens on street corners and house parties.

Eric "Uggie Bowen" has also visited our staff where he would joke around and show off his latest dance moves.

Back at the shooting scene, Bowens reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the chest at an unoccupied building near the intersection of Bergen and 14th Avenue.

Police established a crime scene where they are investigating a motive for the shooting.

We are awaiting official word from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

From all of our morning crew staff, we are extremely saddened by the news of Eric Bowens who we all knew as "Uggie".

Today is would have been Uggie's birthday.
