BREAKING NEWARK: Man Barricaded in House for Hours in Newark Ends with Injuries

A man that barricaded himself in a house in the city's North Ward ended with gunfire early this morning.

Police responded to a house in the 200 block of Mount Pleasant Avenue at around 6:30 p.m. after a woman called police stating that the man was inside the house armed with a gun and wanted to harm himself.

Several police officers arrived to the scene an attempted to get the man to come out peacefully.

After the suspect would not come out, police sealed off the neighborhood, evacuating several residences before calling in additional forces.

Phone negotiations lasted through the night and into the early morning hours with S.W.A.T. taking position around the house according to reports.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., gunfire rang out inside the house forcing S.W.A.T. to rush inside where they located the suspect suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The suspect was rushed to University Hospital under police guard where the extent of his injuries have only been reported as serious.

It is not immediately clear if the suspect caused injuries to anyone at this time as police began their search of the residence.
