BREAKING: Newark Arts High Jaguars Triumph in Historic Newark Public School's Holiday Tournament

In an unprecedented and thrilling finale, the Newark Public School's holiday tournament at the Ronald Stone Gymnasium in Weequahic High School witnessed history as two magnet schools, (for the first time)  the Arts High School Jaguars and the Science Park High School Chargers, competed for the championship title.

Nino The game started off slow, with both teams missing several shots until 5:55 in the first quarter.

It was then that #3 Elisha Erukanure of Science Park High School broke the ice with a three-pointer, energizing the crowd of about 1000 fans. Erukanure led the Science scorers with 19 points; 5 three-pointers for the day.

However, Science High School found themselves struggling to answer Arts High School's #13 Savod Godwin's explosive performance, who scored 13 points in the first half. He was supported by #32 Shelton Colwell, who added 9 points to the tally.

The second half of the game saw the Arts High Jaguars maintaining their lead, never trailing by less than 9 points.

They capitalized on the Science High Chargers' turnovers, converting these mistakes into significant scoring plays.

#10 Anthony Akande of Arts High School impressed the crowd with two remarkable slam dunks in the fourth quarter, diminishing Science High's chances of closing the gap.

Arts High Arts High's aggressive defensive strategy was pivotal in forcing turnovers and containing the Science High guards.

This strategic play led to their historic win, marking Arts High School's first championship in the more than 30-year history of the Newark Public School’s Holiday Tournament.

The final score, Arts High School Jaguars  67 and the Science Park High School Chargers, 49. 

The victory was celebrated with Newark School Superintendent Roger Leon presenting trophies to Coach Prophet Kates and Ms. Devonne DeNose (Principal), honoring the team's remarkable journey and achievement.

This win not only marks a significant milestone for Arts High School but also highlights the growing competitive spirit and talent in Newark's public schools' basketball scene.
