BREAKING NEW BRUNSWICK NJ: Two Dead after Car Plunges into Raritan River off Route 18

There is an active investigation into a crash that had a vehicle leave the Rt.18 roadway and plunge into the Raritan River near George Street early this morning.

Emergency responders rushed to the area of Route 18 at George Street at around 1 a.m. after receiving reports of a car that went off the roadway and into the river according to reports.

Dive and rescue crew were requested in from East Brunswick and Somerset County to search the water for trapped occupants after police confirmed that a vehicle was in the water.

One person was pulled out of the water and pronounced dead as it took rescue crews several minutes to locate the second victim who was ultimately located then pulled from the vehicle and pronounced dead according to reports.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office were on the scene handling the investigation and cause of the crash.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victims.

Police closed the northbound lanes of Rt. 18 at Paulus Boulevard for the investigation and cleanup.
