BREAKING: Mass Casualty Shooting Reported in Newark’s South Ward

A significant police response is on the scene of a shooting with several people injured in Newsrk’s South Ward at this time. 

Residents in the area of Leslie Street and Chancellor Avenue said they heard around 7-8 shots near the intersection around 7:35 p.m. 

When officers arrived, they requested EMS to expedite to the scene after they found as many as four victims struck by gunfire. 

Police began to administer aid to the gunshot victims while other officers taped off the area for the active investigation. 

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified, but there are no official reports of fatalities at this time. 

The suspect fled the scene and remained at large. 

A mass shooting is a crime in which an attacker kills or injures 4 or more individuals simultaneously using a firearm.

UPDATE: The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is confirming one (1) dead and three critical at 8:34 p.m. 

Please avoid the area for the police investigation.
