BREAKING: Man Shot Dead in Newark's West Ward

Police have a crime scene established and an investigation underway into a shooting that resulted in fatal injuries in the city's West Ward  Ward a short time ago. 

According to police, at approximately 11:12 a.m., a ShotSpotter device activation alert police of over a dozen gunshot rounds in the vicinity of 761 South 20th Street. 

When police arrived at the scene, they found a male victim suffering a bullet wound in his head at that location.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been notified and are responding to the scene. 

Multiple shell casings were found in the area and police are looking for a blue 4-door vehicle that was observed speeding away from the scene towards Springfield Avenue after the shooting. 

 

UPDATE 11:50 a.m: Police recovered the stolen Toyota Camry in the 200 block of Brookside in Irvington Township. Several suspects jumped out and fled the scene on foot.
