The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified of a shooting incident that has a male victim dead in Newark’s South Ward at this time.
Residents in the area of 156 Grumman Avenue took cover inside homes after they heard nearly a dozen rounds of gunfire in the neighborhood just before 4:20 p.m.
Police said they received a ShotSpotter activation which prompted police officers’ response.
Upon arrival, police found the victim suffering bullets in his head and torso inside a car, according to responders.
Medical professionals pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a dark-colored BMW.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
