There is a large crime scene established in a section of Newark's South Ward where police are combing the area for victims of a shooting that struck at least one person this afternoon.

In the preliminary investigation, an armed male suspect reportedly exited a vehicle near Avon and Seymour and began fired multiple rounds in the direction of another man before fleeing the scene around 12:01 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they taped off the area after police found shell casings but no victims.

While canvassing the neighborhood, police noticed a male inside a building bleeding heavily after suffering a bullet wound in his chest.

Police say an Emergency Services Unit was also called to the scene to force entry after officers found bullet holes in a door of another home and no one answering repeated knocks by police.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Although police have control of the incident, please avoid the area.

UPDATE: The incident is now a homicide investigation.
