BREAKING: Juvenile Struck in the Chest by Gunfire in Newark's North Ward

A teenage boy was rushed to University Hospital suffering serious injuries after being struck by gunfire in Newark's North Ward overnight. 

A preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 11:45 p.m., police responded to reports of shots fired in the vicinity of 79 4th Avenue prompting a police response. 

Officer arrived at the scene and found a boy inside a residential building, around the age of 16-years-old, bleeding from his chest after a bullet struck him. 

Police secured the scene and launched an investigation.

Newark officials have not released information on if the boy was shot inside the building or if he suffered his injuries on the streets then ran inside the residence. 

The motive for the shooting is under investigation and no suspect has been identified at this time. 

The young man suffered life-threatening injuries and was in severe condition. 

There were no other injuries immediately reported.
