BREAKING: Early Morning Gunfire Erupts in Newark's South Ward

Newark

Police in Newark checked local hospitals for potential gunshot victims while police investigated a shots-fired incident in the city's South Ward Monday.

Early morning gunfire erupted in the vicinity of Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue around 5:30 a.m.

When police arrived, they taped the area off and notified a Major Crimes unit after cops found shell casings and other evidence that a shooting had occurred.

Police canvassed the scene for victims, but no injuries were reported.

The suspect was not apprehended and remains at large.

The City of Newark has experienced a violent surge in unanswered/unexplained shots fired incidents in various sections of the city since last week, including murders and injuries.
