BREAKING: Off-Duty Firefighters Injured in Newark Car Crash

Police in Newark escorted an EMS unit to University Hospital after a South Ward crash injured two off-duty firefighters. 

According to a statement released by Newark Police officials, emergency responders rushed to the vicinity of 170 Frelinghuysen Avenue to investigate reports of a crash at 2:05 a.m. 

Upon arrival, rescue crews found a severely damaged vehicle that slammed into a tractor trailer, trapping both occupants in the car. 

Firefighters use several tools to extricate the victims while stretching one line to prevent a possible fire. 

Both individuals were eventually extricated then rushed to University Hospital suffering severe injuries.   

Newark Police officials said the tractor trailer driver was not injured.

The official cause of the crash is under investigation. 

Officials have not released the off-duty firefighters' identity at this time.
