BREAKING: Container Fire Causes Explosion Near Passaic River in Newark's North Ward

Police have closed a portion of NJ-21 at exit 4 as firefighters battle a container fire that caused an explosion in the city's Noth Ward a short time ago.

According to preliminary information from Newark Police officials, firefighters from several municipalities rushed to an old oil distribution site in the 100 block of Riverside just before 10:15 a.m. 

Firefighters arrived and found heavy flames coming from a large gas storage tank at that location. Newark Hazmat crews are on the scene and firefighters are battling the blaze with foam.

Residents in the immediate area and over the river in Kearny, have left their homes but there is no official evacuation reported by Newark Police officials.

Police are reporting no injuries at this time.
