BREAKING: Children Among Multiple Victims Injured in I-280 Crash in Newark; Fatal Injuries Reported

Authorities are reporting fatal injuries for at least one victim of a crash that occurred on an interstate near the border of Essex and Hudson counties Saturday morning. 

According to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 4:40 a.m., emergency responders rushed to the eastbound lanes of I-280 near Orange Street to investigate reports of a crash. 

 

Upon arrival, police say they found a pick-up truck and two other cars involved in a horrifying collision that had one of the vehicles crash head-ons into the concrete shoulder barrier and another car severely damaged in the center lane from the wreck.

Fatal Crash

Police say at least one adult and two children suffered serious injuries, with one of the victim's injuries reported as fatal.

NJ State Police have the eastbound lanes of the highway closed for the investigation while they try to determine the cause of the crash.

UPDATE: Based on a preliminary investigation a Chrysler passenger car was traveling on I-280 East in the right lane.

A Nissan Juke was traveling east on I-280 in the left lane behind the Chrysler.

A Chevy Silverado was traveling west in the eastbound lanes.

The front of the Chevrolet Silverado struck the front of the Chrysler. The Nissan struck the rear Chrysler and the front of the Chevrolet struck the front of the Nissan.

As a result of the collision the Chrysler struck the right concrete curb and the front of the Nissan struck the right concrete curb and barrier. The driver of the Chrysler suffered fatal injuries, Jerome C. Branham, 67 year old male of Newark.
