Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Sean McAvinue, 42, of Wallington, following an investigation conducted in partnership with the Wallington Police Department.

Authorities said the incident unfolded around 10:51 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, when police responded to a medical call at a residence on Strong Street for a person reportedly having trouble breathing.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a 74-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds to his torso and leg.

The victim was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Officials say he has since been upgraded to stable.

Police also located McAvinue outside the residence with an apparent hand injury and blood on his clothing.

He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Detectives from the prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and launched a joint investigation, with assistance from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities allege that McAvinue used multiple kitchen knives to stab the victim approximately eight times, striking him in the head, torso, and legs.
