A tense situation took place Wednesday morning as law enforcement agencies responded to a barricaded fugitive at the Maple Motel, prompting a full shutdown of Route 1&9 in both directions.
According to preliminary information from Elizabeth officials, the Elizabeth Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit (ESU) was called to assist another agency at approximately 9:53 a.m.
Officers arrived on the scene and began working to bring the standoff to a peaceful resolution.
The exact circumstances surrounding why the individual is wanted have not yet been released, and the case remains an active investigation.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the suspect is armed or if any hostages are involved.
The police presence and ongoing situation caused significant traffic disruptions, with Route 1&9 shut down in both directions for an extended period.
