Barnegat Standoff Ends in Arrest

Barnegat Township

A standoff that lasted several hours in Barnegat ended with one person in custody early Thursday morning.

According to police, officers responded to a Cape Cod Avenue address for a report of a dispute sometime around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday.

After an initial investigation, officers determined that a 48-year-old male subject was to be placed under arrest. The subject refused officer commands to exit his residence, locked himself in the residence, and threatened to exit his residence and use a firearm.

Officers determined that there was no one else in the residence with the subject and immediately worked to secure the scene while directing area residents to shelter in place. Officers continued a dialogue with the subject in an attempt to safely resolve the incident.

After nearly six hours of intermittent dialogue, the subject surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. Officers secured and recovered three handguns, a shotgun, a 9mm carbine, numerous edged weapons, and approximately 3,000 rounds of ammunition from the residence.

The male subject was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center and was charged with obstructing the administration of law.
