Families across Newark are heading into the school year better prepared, thanks to the Ricardo J. Barbosa Foundation, Inc., which recently hosted its Third Annual Back-to-School Book Bag Drive in memory of Officer Ricardo J. Barbosa.

Barbosa, a beloved Newark Police Department 3rd Precinct School Resource Officer, is remembered for his devotion to the children and families of the East Ward.

According to a statement released by the Foundation, a record-setting 530 book bags filled with essential supplies were distributed this year to Newark students.

The donations reached young people at local schools, neighborhood churches, and the Newark YMCA.

The effort also included a major presence at the Newark Board of Education’s citywide event on August 21 at Weequahic High School, where hundreds of students received the tools they need to begin the year on strong footing.

Foundation leaders expressed heartfelt gratitude to their supporters for making this year’s drive possible.

Among those recognized were New Mad Corporation of Newark, EmpireCLS of Secaucus, the Randolph Bulldogs, as well as family members, friends, and community neighbors who helped ensure the effort’s success.

The initiative has grown steadily each year, organizers noted. In 2023, 175 students received book bags, while in 2024 that number doubled to 350.

This year’s total of 530 highlights the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to providing resources and hope to Newark’s youth.

Officer Barbosa, remembered for his warmth, kindness, and ever-present smile, made the well-being of young people his top priority.

The Foundation continues to carry forward his mission by giving children the support and encouragement they need to thrive.
