Authorities Seek the Next of Kin for Homeless Man Beaten to Death near Penn Station in Newark

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that authorities seek the public’s assistance in locating relatives of Mr. Gilbert Garcia, a/k/a Geovanny Gonzales, who died on Friday, June 22, 2018, after being assaulted in Newark.

According to authorities, Garcia was attacked on Raymond Boulevard near Penn Station in the early morning hours.

EMS transported Garcia to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at approximately 9:00 pm.

Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force are attempting to locate any relatives for Garcia at this time.

Garcia was homeless and was known to frequent the area of Penn Station and Riverbank Park in Newark, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly.
