AUTHORITIES: Medical Examiner to Determine Cause of Death for Woman Found Dead in Newark's West Ward

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the death of an unidentified female in Newark earlier tonight.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Newark police officers were dispatched to 300 block of South 20th Street shortly after 9:00 p.m.

Arriving officers located an unresponsive woman in the driveway of a residence authorities said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The exact cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy at the NJ Regional Medical Examiner's Office, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending formal identification and notification to the next of kin , according to Fennelly, who added that the investigation is active and ongoing at this time.
