Authorities Investigate Cause of Death for 68-Year-Old Man Found in Newark

Authorities in Newark are investigating what appears to be a suspicious death of a man found in the city's South Ward last night.

Police responded to the 300 block of Sherman Avenue at approximately 8 p.m. on reports of an injured man at that location.

According to a spokesperson from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, arriving units found the unidentified 68-year-old male with what the spokesperson described as a "life threatening injury".

Authorities said EMS transported the man to Beth Israel Hospital where he died at around 6:40 a.m. Saturday morning.

"The cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy" the spokesperson said.

"We are in the preliminary stages of an open and active investigation and will have additional information if and when it becomes available " the spokesperson continued.
