Authorities Identify Man Fatally Struck by Truck in Newark's North Ward

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in Newark this afternoon, in which a city resident was fatally injured after being struck by a box truck in the 700 block of Broadway.

Authorities said the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon when the victim was struck as he attempted to cross Broadway. The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, identified as Helder Andrade Rodrigues, age 41 of Newark, may have fallen into the path of the truck, which was traveling south on Broadway. 

The driver of the box truck stopped and remained on the scene. Rodrigues was pronounced dead at the scene according to authorities. 

The incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, according to Fennelly, who added that no charges have been filed.
