Authorities ID Lakewood Woman Struck, Killed by Car

There is an active and ongoing investigation into what caused the pedestrian strike that killed a 76-year-old woman in Lakewood on Sunday.

According to a preliminary investigation, Sofia Biernacka, 76, of Lakewood, was attempting to cross Route 9 near the intersection with Sixth Street around 5:30 p.m, when she was struck by a car.

The victim was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, where she was pronounced dead.

Officials say the driver, only identified as a 63-year-old Freehold man, remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation by State Police, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the county sheriff’s office assisted Lakewood police.
