Attorney General’s Office Investigating Fatal Police Involved Shooting in Paterson

The Attorney General’s Office has announced that it is conducting an investigation of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on July 8 inside an apartment located in the 100 block of Hamilton Avenue in Paterson, N.J.

One male civilian - who was identified as Malik Canty, 36, of New York, N.Y. - sustained fatal injuries.

The shooting involved members of the U.S. Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force.

The Task Force members were seeking to arrest Mr. Canty on a warrant out of New York City for criminally negligent homicide.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and a loaded 9mm handgun was recovered near his body.

The investigation is being conducted by the Integrity Bureau within the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.

This investigation is being conducted pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, P.L.2019, c.1, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
