Attempted Auto Theft Results in Shots Fired Incident in Kearny

Kearny Police are investigating a shots-fired incident that erupted near a shopping center in the town Tuesday night.

Police have not released much information on the incident, but according to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 7:50 p.m., a police officer reportedly observed a male suspect attempt to enter a car at 175 Passaic Avenue unlawfully.

The preliminary investigation revealed that when the officer attempted to intervene, the suspect reportedly entered a white Hyundai and tried to run the officer over.

Reports say gunfire rang out and bullets struck the vehicle, but it is not clear who fired the shots or if the suspect suffered any injuries.

According to the investigation, police followed the car for a distance before breaking off the pursuit on I-280 near exit 12B.

Police in Newark found the unoccupied car crashed into a tractor-trailer in the vicinity of 250 Passaic Street around 8:30 p.m.

According to police, the car was found with several bullet holes.

**UPDATE:** The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting in Kearny that occurred last night just after 8pm near the intersection of Bergen and Passaic Avenues in which a vehicle was struck. There are no reports at this time of any injured individuals and the investigation is ongoing.
