A 29-year-old Asbury Park resident has been charged in the deadly stabbing of a Paterson man last week.

Officials said the incident happened on October 22, 2025, around 2:21 p.m. near Market Street and Veterans Place.

Responding Paterson Police officers found William Davis, 38, of Paterson, lying on the sidewalk with multiple stab wounds.

He was taken to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following an investigation, detectives identified Jean Romelus as the suspect. He was arrested without incident on October 28.

Romelus is charged with first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Officer-In-Charge Patrick Murray said in a statement that their offices are seeking pretrial detention, with a hearing to be scheduled before a Superior Court judge.

If convicted, Romelus faces 30 years to life in prison on the murder charge, in addition to several years for the weapons offenses.
