Arrest Made in Paterson Homicide

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Joshua Washington, 25, from Paterson, was arrested on September 19, in relation to a shooting investigation that took place September 1, 2018 in the area of Highland and Sparrow Street.

Police say Mr. Washington is charged with Attempted Murder, First Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree, Aggravated Assault, Fourth Degree, Aggravated Assault, Third Degree, and Possession Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Third Degree. In addition, Mr. Washington has been charged with Eluding, Second Degree and Resisting Arrest, Fourth Degree in relation to an incident that occurred September 19..

Police say on September 1st members of the Paterson Police Department were notified that a 22-year-old-male Prospect Park resident had arrived at Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson for treatment of a non-fatal gunshot wound.

Based on the investigation Joshua Washington was identified as the shooter and arrested on September 19th..

According to police, on September 19, 2018, members of the Paterson Police Department located Joshua Washington in a motor vehicle in the area of Lafayette and Summer Street Paterson and attempted to arrest him for the September 1st shooting investigation.

The police activated their emergency lights and sirens and Mr. Washington initially pulled over, then accelerated at a high rate of speed. While eluding Mr. Washington caused a motor vehicle accident in the area of Carroll Street and Park Avenue Paterson, NJ. Mr. Washington exited the vehicle and fled on foot where he was apprehended on Park Avenue near Summer Street.

The sentencing exposure for Mr. Washington on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on Second Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole

eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Fourth Degree Aggravated Assault it is 18 months New Jersey State Prison with 18 months to be served before parole eligibility; on Third Degree Aggravated Assault it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; on Third Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; on Second Degree Eluding, it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison; and on Fourth Degree Resisting Arrest it is up to 18 months New Jersey State Prison.

Joshua Washington is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing on Thursday September 20, 2018 at 1:30, p.m. The State intends to file a motion for pretrial detention in this matter that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
