Arrest Made in Newark South Ward Shootout

Newark

A police foot pursuit for a male wanted for firing nearly a dozen rounds in a section of Newark's South Ward ended in the arrest of a man Saturday evening.

Police officials said residents in the area of 860 South 10th Street dialed 911 after they heard about eight rounds of gunfire around 7:15 p.m.

Officers arrived at the scene and taped the area off after locating shell casings and other evidence where a ShotSpotter activation detected gunfire on 10th Street.

Police say they spotted the suspect described by residents near Ingraham Place and engaged in a foot pursuit before taken the suspect into custody a short time later.

A police officer suffered a non-life threatening injury during the pursuit.

Police have not confirmed if the suspect was caught with the weapon at this time.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
