Arrest Made in Newark Carjacking; Vehicle Recovered in Irvington

Newark Irvington Township

Authorities arrested the driver of a carjacked vehicle today after he crashed after attempting to elude police.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers were conducting quality of life operations in the area of 14th Avenue in Irvington this morning when they observed a 2015 Ford Focus, that was carjacked at gunpoint by two males with masks earlier this week in Newark.

According to Fontoura, when officers began to follow the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Deondre Goyshay, 20, of Newark, sped away but ultimately crashed at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Oak Street.

Police said Goyshay bailed out of the car and attempted to run from the scene but was taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers.

Authority charged Goyshay with receiving stolen property, eluding police and resisting arrest by force. Following questioning, he will be lodged in the Essex County jail.

The vehicle was turned over to the Newark Police Major Crimes Unit for their ongoing investigation into the carjacking.

Police say they recovered a ski-mask at the time of Goyshay’s arrest.
