Arrest Made in Homicide of Newark Mother of Four

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable announced that Sandro Vargas, 44, of Irvington was arrested today for the murder of Patricia Hiciano, 37, of Newark.

Authorities said Hiciano, a mother of four, was reported missing on March 10th by her family after she failed to arrive home from work. Hiciano was employed at El Merengue, a restaurant in Newark's North Ward.

Authorities said Hiciano's body was discovered inside an apartment building located at 944 South 20th Street on March 14th.The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

Authorities said Vargas has been charged with one count of first degree murder. He is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. The Honorable Sallyanne Floria, Essex County Assignment Judge, set bail at $500,000.
