Armed Suspect Fleeing Shooting Scene Fires Shots at Police in Paterson

Authorities in Passaic County announced that on Saturday, at approximately 1:00 a.m., the Paterson Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the area of East 22nd Street and 12th Avenue in Paterson.

Upon their arrival, officers located a male victim, a 22-year-old from Paterson, shot multiple times.

Police said while responding to the scene, a Paterson police officer attempted to pull over a vehicle of interest that was driving away from the shooting scene.

At that time, an occupant of the vehicle shot at the responding officer.

The Paterson police officer returned fire from his service-issued firearm. However, the vehicle and its occupants were able to avoid apprehension.

The suspect vehicle and its occupants at the time of the shooting are currently at large.

The Paterson police officer was not injured. It is unknown if any of the suspects were injured.

The victim of the shooting at East 22nd Street has been admitted at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson in stable condition.

Pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, the Attorney General Office of Public Integrity and Accountability has been notified.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has been designated the independent prosecutor for this attempted murder investigation and the subsequent officer-involved shooting,
